Local Talent: Shark Week

General Manager

Spearheaded by Ryan Mitchell, this local talent is something to talk about. Shark Week not only has one of the best band names, but also one of the best sounds in the D.C. area; their hard bluesy, surf sound instantaneously attracts.

This D.C. quartet features Ryan Mitchell on vocals and guitar, Eric Myer on guitar, Danielle Vu on bass and Dan Newhauser on drums.

Although they only have one self-titled EP out, appropriately released during Discovery Channel‰’s Shark Week, it is more than enough to showcase their high-energy, exciting sound. The EP starts out with a simple plea by the band as they just want to get high. Newhauser provides a driving beat that keeps the track alive and moving. A sweet guitar riff leads into “If You Want Me to Stay (For a While),” a song that highlights the abilities of the bands guitarists.

The last cut on the EP, “There Comes A Time,” reveals Shark Week’s diversity as they slow down the tempo but don‰’t let go of the passion or groove.

All in all, this is a killer start to what is sure to be a fast-growing career and is available to stream and download here.

And what‰’s better than reading a review and realizing, “Hey, so I can go see this band on Friday, Oct. 5 right here on campus?‰” Answer: not much.

If their EP doesn‰’t get you psyched up to see Shark Week, with Maryland’s Teen Suicide and AU’s Teen Lit, then their craziness at live shows should. Just take a look at Mitchell hanging from the ceiling on their self-titled EP cover.

See you Friday!
