DJ Spotlight of the Week: Iulia Gheorghiu

General Manager

Name of show: Killin’ It Radio. Listen up as you wake up on Mondays, 7-8 a.m.!

Three words to describe your show: Quite the killer.

What can we expect to hear on your show?
I try to keep it pretty upbeat. After all, I‰’m trying to wake people up! The music will come in a great variety, but I promise to have one song by The Killers at least once during my show.
The talk show part is light and simple — it‰’s about appreciating life and our own circumstances. I welcome a lot of callers and hope to have plenty of guests on the show!

Your most memorable concert?
I‰’ve seen Pink Floyd live three times. And I go to these with my mom and dad, mind you. I know, I‰’m quite the cool kid. But, man. I love Pink Floyd. When they start with “In the Flesh‰” and you are close enough to feel the vibrations of the chords ripple through the giant arena and through your rib cage, you feel infinite. Even though, I suppose, “The Wall‰” is about oppression and fascism and all that. I find all of it to be quite liberating.

Who were some of your favorite musicians in middle school?
Middle school? Man. That was kind of a dark time for me, music-wise. I remember in seventh grade, we had a basic assignment of interpreting lyrics from our favorite song. At that time, I knew classic rock. A lot of it. And I didn‰’t know what would be “cool.” A very trustworthy source told me that Papa Roach is awesome.
So here I am — a meek little seventh grader, stepping to the front of her class with a little ponytail bobbing behind her at the top of her head, talking about how moved she was by the song “Scars.‰” People thought I was a little weird and that the music choice was out of character. Eh, whatever. “Scars‰” by Papa Roach kind of grew on me, actually.
However, my middle school years were filled with Broadway songs and Billy Joel, Elton John, Queen and Aerosmith. Also, the Goo Goo Dolls, I guess. Before long, I discovered The Killers and my life took a turn for the better! I still love classic rock and the oldies though.

Favorite throwback:
“I Believe in a Thing Called Love‰” by The Darkness

Fun fact:
I lived in Romania until I was 10. If you listen to my show, maybe you can hear a slight accent. I‰’m told that when I cuss I have a distinct Chicago-Easter-European twang.

Favorite D.C. venue:
9:30 Club. They just bring in awesome people all the freaking time, not that other places don‰’t. But they just get me — the minute I feel like seeing a specific band, I see that they‰’ll be at the 9:30. Amazing, right? That‰’s like ESPN or something!

Album recommendation:
Have you bought Brandi Carlisle‰’s album, “Bear Creek,‰” that came out early this summer? Do it. Are you doing it? Are you on your way to the music store or electronics store of your choice to get yourself a copy? Yeah? Good. She‰’s worth it. I love her voice and songwriting.

Dream concert lineup:
I don‰’t think they would all necessarily be cohesive music styles — so instead of a concert line-up, I will tell you my top 3 bands/artists that I would want to see live: The Killers, namesake of my radio show, in case you didn‰’t notice; Alex Clare, the male version of Adele; and Brandi Carlisle, whose voice will always make me sway.

Video of the Week: Speaking of Alex Clare, check out this unofficial video to Clare‰’s cover of Etta James!
