DJ Spotlight of the Week: Sydney Gore & Julia Schroeder

General Manager

Name of show: Artificial Sweetener, live on Sundays from 9-10 a.m.! (Like and follow us on Facebook.)

Three words to describe your show: Bubblegum Teen Angst

What can we expect to hear on your show?
Julia: Indie alternative rock from past to present, some ’90s grunge, some maybe 1960s rock legend anthems. It’s a pretty rad time.

Sydney: Everything that Julia said, but sometimes when I’m in the mood, I drop in R&B slow jams such as Robin Thicke or Frank Ocean. We‰’re all about the throwbacks from all eras, but we like to keep things fresh with modern tunes. In between songs, we like to talk about relevant things in society and pop culture. It’s a super rad time!

Your most memorable concert?
Julia: I saw Passion Pit at the 9:30 club last month! That place became a sea of sweaty, jumping, falsetto-loving music lovers REAL QUICK. I saw them a few years ago during their “Manners” tour, and I’m happy to report that their newest album, “Gossamer,” integrates into their set beautifully.

Sydney: The most memorable concert I have ever been to was The Killers. I saw them this past summer at the Firefly Festival in Dover, Del. They have been my favorite band since middle school so I had high expectations going into the show- no surprise that they exceeded them. From start to finish, the experience was magical — I was front row, they played all of my favorite songs and I was surrounded by the most down-to-earth “victims.” I almost cried. A few months ago, The Killers released their comeback album, “Battle Born.” I’ve never been happier.

Who were some of your favorite musicians in middle school?
Julia: Oh god, I’d like to think of middle school as somewhat of a “dark age” in terms of my musical taste. I liked a lot of classic american rock, ÌÊ la the Guitar Hero era. I also really, really liked BeyoncÌ©. I idolized her booty-shaking abilities.

Sydney: I also entered a dark phase in my life during middle school, but before I completely switched over, I loved listening to Maroon 5. (I still do, but don‰’t talk to me about their last album.) I really felt a connection to alternative/indie rock bands like Dashboard Confessional, Midtown and 30 Seconds To Mars. After I saw “Mr. Brightside” on the VH1 Countdown, I was hooked on The Killers. Amidst my transition, I had always been a huge No Doubt fan, so I also followed Gwen Stefani‰’s solo career. All my life, I have wanted to be her. Not only is Gwen Stefani a blonde bombshell, but she ain‰’t no hollaback girl.

Favorite throwback:
Julia: Goldfinger’s “Superman.” Anyone who played the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games will confirm that this indeed is the song of their childhood.

Sydney: Hilary Duff’s “Come Clean.” I’m always in the mood for Hilary Duff. This song brings me back to my tween years where all I watched was “Laguna Beach,” the REAL Orange County. Team LC 4eva.

Fun fact:
Julia: I have the Sun Sneeze Gene. Meaning that almost every time I enter the sun, I sneeze one or two times. Personally, I think I might just be a vampire.

Sydney: During my senior year of high school, I was in 30 Seconds To Mars’ MTV Unplugged session. Sometimes I forget. I‰’m convinced that Jared Leto is a vampire because he still looks like Jordan Catalano.

Favorite D.C. venue:
Julia: 9:30 club, for sure.

Sydney: 9:30 club, hands down. It reminds me of Union Transfer, my favorite venue in Philly. Rock & Roll Hotel has brought a ton of awesome bands this season, so that‰’s definitely my runner-up hot spot.

Album recommendation:
Julia: Little Tybee’s “Building a Bomb.” A friend introduced me to this little beauty some time ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Sydney: hitRECord‰’s “Move On The Sun” album. I‰’ve been streaming the album all week on Spotify. It‰’s full of pop, jazz, hip-hop/rap, R&B and indie jams so it’s got something for everyone. The last track features Joseph Gordon-Levitt‰ÛÓswoon hard, ladies.

Dream concert lineup:
Julia: Fleet Foxes, Local Natives, and The Tallest Man on Earth would be an excellent folky lineup. But if I’m feeling indulgent, I’d go with Marina and the Diamonds, Lana Del Rey and Sleigh Bells. Power women.

Sydney: Local Natives, Real Estate and Surfer Blood would be one of the most incredible shows of all time. On another note, I would also love to line up Dead Man‰’s Bones, Kitten, Summer Camp and Cults. Talk about a gnarly show.

Video of the Week:
Julia: Dirty Projectors – “About to Die.” It’s just so groovy.

Sydney: No Doubt – “Looking Hot.” It‰’s one of the most artistic, entertaining and visually appealing videos I have watched in a long time. The song itself is super catchy and has become my new GNO (“girl‰’s night out‰Û) jam. No Doubt actually pulled the video because of complaints about the “Cowboys and Indians‰” theme being racially insensitive and offensive toward Native Americans. All I can say is, haterz to the left. You can find it floating around on Tumblr though!
