Overlooked Records of 2012: Holograms

Holograms – Holograms

Holograms‰’ self-titled debut evokes the gray energy of Joy Division and the synth based percussion of the ’80s. Though a bit odd in theory, the Swedish quartet takes all of their frustration and despair and produces something that‰’s more than just another post-punk revival record. The opener “Monolith” gradually builds from a throbbing bass line to a desperate instrumental that is tempered by the vocals. While things don‰’t improve thematically from here, the synth and melodic guitar breathe life into tracks like “Chasing My Mind” and “ABC City.” Holograms avoid the grimy instrumentation that is usually standard with this sound, giving something new to the average garage rock sensibilities. As a whole, this release is strange, experimental and has easily shown Holograms to be more than your average punk band.
