No Cover: Love Gained and Lost

Kaylee Dugan

Valentine‰’s Day is a holiday created to make us feel like we‰’re all back in middle school. At best, you‰’re running on a sugar high, at worst, you‰’re crying alone in your room åÊwondering if [insert name here] will ever notice you.

But there‰’s no reason for anyone to be alone this weekend, because we live in an amazing city with so many things to do it will make your head spin. Whether you‰’re interested in dinner and a show or just pure musical bliss, the district has everything you need to satisfy your romantic impulses.

Valentine‰’s Day:

Valentine’s Day Rock & Roll Dance Party with DJs Glenn, Mad Squirrel, Baby Alcatraz, Soul Call Paul and Chad America
8 p.m., FREE

As usual, Black Cat is throwing a free Valentine‰’s day party! Which is awesome if you don‰’t have any Valentine‰’s Day plans, or if you want to hang out with a friend/date and not spend too much cash money. Plus U Street has a ton of great an inexpensive restaurants, like Ben’s Chili Bowl and Oohh‰’s & Aahh‰’s Cafe, if you want to get food before or after the dance party.

Cody ChesnuTT with Julia Nixon
7:30 p.m., $17

Yes, Cody ChesnuTT collaborated with The Roots on one of their most popular songs of all time, Seed 2.0. Take a second to listen to the original version of the song, and know that this will be a very good concert at a very cool (and new!) venue. Show up early and get some food or drinks in the dining room, then head stage and listen to some awesome music with a special someone (or alone — we don‰’t judge).

Jerry “The Iceman” Butler
10 p.m., $50-$100

The perfect romantic Valentine‰’s day plans. Purchase the special Valentine‰’s day tickets ($100) and get dinner with your show. If you‰’re not interested in food than regular tickets are $50, which may be a little steep, but Jerry Butler is a legend. If you‰’re too busy watching Casablanca and crying on Thursday, Jerry Butler is also playing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

Friday:

Soul Suit with All Good Funk Alliance
8:30 p.m., $8

If you‰’re interested in dancing to Funk and Soul for hours at a time, then this is the place to be. Not only are the tickets crazy cheap, but DC9 is close to all of those great U Street restaurants and bars. Plus, All Good Funk Alliance is a DMV staple. They‰’ve already been played on No Cover twice and there have only been four No Cover shows.

Texas Is the Reason with Title Fight
9 p.m., $20

If the words ’90s, punk or hardcore get you excited, then it looks like you have plans on Friday! ’90‰’s punk/hardcore band Texas Is the Reason have reunited once more for an East Coast tour and they‰’re bringing along their hardcore little brothers, Title Fight. If you need something to do after the show just go right down the hall to the Local’s Only Burlesque and Variety Show.

Epic Dance Party with DJ Doc Rok
11 p.m., FREE

The Black Cat isn’t the only venue with a free dance party this week, the Rock & Roll Hotel is also throwing their Epic Dance Party, which they have every third Friday of the month. As long as you‰’re 21, this is a great (and cheap) Friday night option.

Saturday:

Desaparecido w/ Joyce Manor, States & Kingdoms
8 p.m., $25

If you can‰’t get enough of Conor Oberst‰’s wacky hijinks then head over to the 9:30 Club where you can cry your eyes out with a bunch of strangers. Afterwards, head to the Satellite Room, a new restaurant bar right behind the 9:30 Club for burgers and shakes.

Meshuggah, w/ Animals As Leaders
7:30 p.m., $26

Here at the wordy version of No Cover we like to include as many different genre‰’s as possible, so, if you want something a little more heavy metal than the previous options go see Meshuggah! Considering their constant musical innovation this should be a very interesting show.

Maysa
8 p.m., $45-$50

Underground jazz vocalist Maysa may finally start to be a part of the mainstream, but you can catch her at The Howard Theater “before she was cool.‰” I mean, bragging about who got to see who first is like a sport here at WVAU.

Sunday:

The Maccabees with Reputante, Gambles
8 p.m., $12

The Maccabees are a pretty cute British band who had their adorable song Toothpaste Kisses played in a phone commercial. This is a great high energy, yet not over the top, show to go to on a Sunday night when those 8:55am classes seem so far away.

DC Loves Dilla with Waajeed, Roddy Rod, 2 Tone Jones, Quartermaine, Book, Marshall Law, Minus 9, Harvey Dent, R.B.I.
9 p.m., $10

Dancing at U Street Music Hall is always a solid weekend plan. With the best soundsystem in the District and too many DJ‰’s to count, this is sure to be a great time.
