Video Voyage: Suit & Tie

Jack Fitzpatrick

After a five-year hiatus from the music world, I have missed JT. Besides hosting SNL, starring in Friends with Benefits, being featured on a few tracks and being present on many of my mix CDs, he has not been a large presence in my life. But, if you haven‰’t heard, JT is back. His new album, The 20/20 Experience, will be dropping on March 19.

“Suit & Tie,‰” the first single from the album, rose to the top 5 on both Billboard‰’s Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Charts. The single is being praised for its retro feel. When the official music video premiered on Valentine‰’s Day, the rest of the world, including myself, was giddy. The man who brought “sexy back‰” has debuted a brand new music video. How could this not be the best thing ever?

Before debuting the official music video last week, JT gave his fans an early Valentine’s Day gift with an official lyrics video. It was wonderful. It shows Justin Timberlake gambling, getting dressed, drinking, flicking his lighter, hitting glass with hammers and walking. These activities don‰’t seem that glamorous, but Justin Timberlake somehow does it yet again.

And then I watched the official music video. My first thought was, “Wow! What a guy!‰” The video shows a “normal” day in the life of JT. During the first part of the song, the video shows Timberlake getting ready for his day. He is being massaged by beautiful women as he rises from bed, playing chess with a model backstage, going over some dance moves, as well as eating cereal and drinking scotch with Jay-Z.

Once the song transitions to a more upbeat sound, the video has him in the recording studio, working meticulously to make sure that the song is perfect. Another frame has Timberlake performing to an empty venue wearing a dress shirt with unbuttoned buttons without a tie. A third scene shows him performing onstage in his full suit and (bow)tie with his band members, backup dancers and Jay-Z.

Jay-Z is drinking what I believe is still scotch, smoking a cigar and rapping while clips of male and female dancers take their clothes off with class. During this sequence, Jay-Z sports a variety of outfits. He models a patterned suit with a bow tie, a vest and regular tie and an unbuttoned dress shirt with an untied bow tie hanging at his neck.

The video concludes with Justin and others dancing in what looks to be a fountain, splashing water everywhere. The ending is perfect. The black and white video works well with the soulful and romantic aspects of the lyrics, background vocalists, performance style and the song as a whole.

The “Suit & Tie‰” music video describes how much care and attention JT gives to his music and how important it is to his lifestyle. He wakes up and has breakfast with Jay-Z. He reads sheet music on his iPad while surrounded by women. He is constantly refining his dance moves, nonchalantly backstage or dramatically in a shallow pool of water. My only qualm is that Justin Timberlake did not wear a necktie. Instead, he’s seen wearing a tuxedo for most of the video. I know I may be a bit nit-picky, but I had envisioned him at the house of a high-end designer being fitted for a custom-made suit while perusing through endless catalogue of ties. However, the classic tuxedo and bowtie is always a solid choice for formal wear.
