No Cover: Big Spender

Kaylee Dugan

It‰’s a great week to live in D.C. and have enough money (and time) to go to concerts. If that campus job cash is burning a hole if your pocket, then pick a concert off the list and trade your hard earned cash for sweet sweet tunes. Even if you‰’ve already spent all your money on take out, there is plenty of free and cheap shows to keep you entertained.

Of course, I‰’ll be playing even more of what’s happening in D.C. this week the No Cover radio show, so be sure to tune in on Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m. for more info!

Monday:

Hot Gypsy Jazz
7 p.m., FREE

While the title may be questionable, Bistrot Lepic Wine Bar is having a free jazz night focused on a style of jazz called gypsy jazz/hot club jazz. Largely believed to be started by a Romani guitarist named Jean “Django‰” Reinhardt, the style combines Romani influences with swing, the popular genre at the time.
Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra
8 p.m., $10

Every Monday night Bohemian Caverns has a $10 show for their 17 piece big band. Cure your Monday blues with a trip to Ben‰’s Chili Bowl before heading over to Bohemian Caverns. It‰’s the perfect way to start your week.

Tuesday:

Elliott Yamin
7:30 p.m., $22

Do you still like American Idol? Are you my Uncle Joe? Then go see ex-American Idol competitor, Elliott Yamin at The Hamilton. Show up early and get some sushi, pizza or whatever before heading to the show. If you close your eyes and wish hard enough, it will probably even feel like you‰’re at an American Idol taping.
Gaelic Storm, Danny Burns
7:30 p.m., $35

Speaking of relatives, one of mine introduced me to Gaelic Storm years ago. If you‰’re into very solid irish music, then forget about your Tuesday night class and metro on over to Alexandria. Also, it‰’s mandatory that you chug a Guinness or Jameson (preferably both)åÊwhile there.

Wednesday:

Pat Green
7 p.m., $35)

If you have ever listened to any country music station for any length of time, you‰’ve probably heard Pat Green‰’s “Wave On Wave.” D.C. doesn‰’t seem to have many country concerts (they all seem to go to Merriweather), so jump on this if you have an interest in country music.
Lupe Fiasco
8 p.m., $35

Considering Lupe‰’s star status, it seems strange that his concert at the Fillmore Silver Spring is only $35. If you‰’re a hip hop fan, or just into his top 40 hits, snap up some tickets and hope he doesn‰’t play anything off of Lasers… Unless you‰’re into that.
L’Enfant String Trio / Left Bank Quartet / Kaoru Watanabe and Kenny Endo: Rhythms of Japanese Drums and Flutes / EivÌür
What do these shows have in common? They‰’re all free! If you have nothing to do or need the perfect excuse to procrastinate, check some of these out. Who cares about midterms anyway?

Thursday:

Bebel Gilberto
7 p.m., $35

For another $35, you can get a thorough introduction to Brazil‰’s bossa nova style of music. Bossa nova is a mixture of samba and jazz that became very popular during the ’50s and ’60s. Bebel Gilberto is heavily influenced by bossa nova and recorded her first album when she was seven with saxophone player, Stan Getz.
Erykah Badu
8 p.m., $50

The Grammy award-winning artist will be at the Fillmore SIlver Spring on thursday and friday night. While tickets are officially sold out, if you‰’re really interested in hip-hop, soul, or R&B, you may be able to score tickets off of Craigslist or StubHub. As we‰’ve talked about many times on the show, meeting strangers in dark alleys for concert tickets is always a good idea.
Nouveau Riche with Sammy Bananas, Gavin Holland, Steve Starks, Nacey, Clown Prince
10 p.m., $10

I can‰’t really explain my love for Nouveau Riche, I‰’m pretty sure 50 percent of it has to do with their ridiculous name. While I might laugh to myself everytime I read it, Gavin Holland, Steve Starks and Nacey are all great DJs. Plus, they‰’re playing at U Street Music Hall, famous for having the best sound system in the city.

Friday:

Naughty By Nature
8 p.m., $32-$37

A blast from the past. Their popularity may have peaked in the ’90s, but Naughty By Nature continued recording until 2006, when they broke up. In 2010 the group got back together and have been releasing albums ever since. If you‰’ve been dying to hear O.P.P. live, then here‰’s your chance.
Every Time I Die, The Acacia Strain, Vanna, Hundredth, No Bragging Rights
6 p.m., $17-$20

If you feel like you don‰’t have enough metal in your life, then Every Time I Die & Company have the cure. For only $17 you can have your fill of metal and probably have your ears permanently damaged. It‰’s sounds worth the risk.
Beach Fossils, Young Rapids, Go Cozy
8 p.m., $10

If you‰’re more indie than hip-hop or metal, DC9 has you covered. Just make sure to throw on all of the Urban Outfitters clothes you own and brush up on your vinyl knowledge.
