The Undercurrent: The Apocalypse Is Stalling…

Eli Fosl

Big news has been developing over the course of the few months in the emo music community. It has been officially confirmed that in 2013, we will be hearing some tunes from Their/They‰’re/There, a collaborative group project among Matthew Frank of Loose Lips Sink Ships, Evan Weiss of Into It. Over It. and Mike Kinsella, emo prince and the mind behind bands such as Cap‰’n Jazz, American Football and Owen.

Yes, you read that correctly, and if you know what‰’s good for you, you can stop hyperventilating now. The band has formed a Facebook group and has been keeping the world on edge with sparse, muddled updates. The most recent of which gave us a look at a blurry, black and white photo of the three band members, along with a heads up for “news coming soon.‰”

Now, maybe for some reason you aren‰’t sitting on the edge of your seat, taking deep breaths and meticulously playing through your old emo records to get ready. But let me tell you, you should be more than excited for this project.

Loose Lips Sink Ships has sort of fallen off the map of popular post-rock outfits these days, but in reality, it‰’s harder to find a more classic, solid sound than that produced by Matt Frank. Frank‰’s style supersedes the more popularized, modern sound of post-rock that tends to includes similar structure of melodic, electric guitars building to drum-heavy crescendos and then dying out with brief, catchy little melodies. LLSS brings more to the table in terms of lo-fi, math, and ambience. Although the guitars never fail to stay catchy, the overall sound is more comparable to that of Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Slint.

The next member, Evan Weiss, is the guy who put this rag-tag dream team together. Evan is a twinkle daddy who has been producing top-notch lo-fi emo acoustic jams for the past few years under the name Into It. Over It. (or IIOI). He‰’s a talented dude who hasn‰’t dabbled in the mathematical in ways that Mike and Matt have, but he is someone who puts a lot of soul and energy into his music and has a lot of skill on the guitar. I‰’m hoping this collaboration is going to be his break into a new style in which he can experiment more.

The third and final addition to this trio is a man who needs little introduction. Mike Kinsella, in my biased eyes, can do no wrong. He is the King Midas of emo music. Every project that has had Mike as a member has been a fantastic one. His songwriting has evolved throughout styles like emo, math-rock, acoustic, indie and many more genres. The only question now is, what direction will these three icons in There/They‰’re/Their take?

It‰’s hard to say for sure, but we can try and infer based on what we do know. Since the project was Evan‰’s idea, I‰’d like to think he‰’s trying to go for something more complex and experimental. It would explain his reaching out to Matt and Mike, which also seems in line with Matt Frank‰’s trajectory. Frank has never done much outside of the realm of post-rock, except that his most recent stuff has been particularly mathy. So this would be along his comfort zone while moving in the direction he seems to want his music to go. Mike has been exclusively focused on his solo acoustic-emo project, Owen, recently, which is not very different from IIOI.

I‰’m hoping that he‰’ll be headed back to his math days with this new project. I‰’m guessing this group will be mostly math-like, although I could definitely see an acoustic base or even an ambient, lo-fi sound (maybe in a perfect world). No matter what the style is like, I‰’m positive that this group is going to bring something wonderful to the table. This group‰’s music, along with the announced new releases from Native and Kidcrash, are my most anticipated releases of 2013. Sometimes I think I was meant to be alive right now, and groups like Their/They’re/There are the reason why.
