No Cover: Spring Break

Kaylee Dugan

We‰’ve all been suffering from midterm madness, but finally everyone is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel! What better way to celebrate the end of midterm and the approach of spring break than some super sweet concerts? It‰’s time to break out of the library and into the streets.

Monday

Billy Thompson (8p.m. / 10 p.m., $18)
For less money than most people spend on a Friday or Saturday night, head to Blue‰’s Alley for some amazing guitar heavy music. Thompson has opened up for legends like B.B. King and Joe Cocker, among others. It‰’s a perfect way to start your week off right.

Trinidad Jame$ (8 p.m., $17-$100)

For those of you that need to hear “All Gold Everything‰” live (or just like Trinidad Jame$) he‰’ll be at the Howard Theater with Solo D, DJ Chubb, and my current obsession, Phil Da Phuture. Seriously, try listening to “Your Mouth‰” just once. It‰’s impossible.

Tuesday

Mac DeMarco, Naomi Punk, Calvin Love (7:30 p.m., $12)
If you want to listen to some chill indie rock and get silly with some WVAU people then this is the place to be. For only $12 you can watch MacDemarco get “goofy‰” on stage while playing a guitar he apparently bought for 30 canadian dollars.

Duo Harpverk (6 p.m., FREE)
Made up of Katie Buckley (harpist) and Frank Aarnink (percussionist), Duo Harpverk perform and commission Icelandic music. If any of that peaks your interest they‰’ll be performing for free at the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage.

Mouse On Mars (7 p.m., $15)
If there is one thing I love about always having to write about (or play) musicians coming to DC, it‰’s all the cool band names. The name Mouse On Mars seems like it could be a Fievel spin off (I mean that in the best way). If you feel the need to listen to some serious electronic music, come see them at U Street Music Hall.

Wednesday

UrbanArias / Furia Flamenca / Sousou and Maher Cissoko (FREE)
If you‰’re too busy saving up for spring break shenanigans to buy concert tickets, don‰’t fret! Both the Kennedy Center and Sidney Harmon Hall are having a bunch of free shows this week.

Veronica Falls, Cold Showers (8 p.m., $13-$15)
Go to the Black Cat Backstage, if you‰’re interested in British indie pop or don‰’t feel like studying for midterms. One of the best things about the Backstage is its intimacy, and can you really put a price on feeling like you‰’re on top of the band?

Thursday

Rare Monk, Ghost Hotel (9 p.m., Velvet Lounge)

More amazing band names, more indie rock. Break out your best fake I.D. (or real one if you‰’re boring) and dance yourself silly. After all, it is Thirsty Thursday.
Nanook / Brent Birckhead Quartet / Naseer Shamma‰’s Al-Oyoun Ensemble / Bushmaster / Open Mic w/ Big Boy Little (FREE)
More free music! There‰’s nothing better than free music. Now you have no excuse when you‰’re at home on Thursday night complaining about having nothing to do.

Friday

80s Night (Free)
The Marx Cafe is having a free 80‰’s dance night! Sounds like the perfect place to end a stressful, midterms filled, weekend. If you show up early you can grab one of their tasty burgers.

Heavy Breathing (9 p.m., $10-$12)
If you missed them when they were at AU with Misun and BCKWTR, here‰’s your second chance! Get ready to dance so much your shoes will disintegrate into the floor, never to be seen again.

Shark Week, Dance for the Dying, The Flying Eyes, Joy Buttons (8 p.m., $10)
This weekend is full of bands who have performed at AU. Get a chance to see Shark Week before they play the super expensive Sweetlife Festival. Plus, the always cool and fun to dance to, Dance for the Dying.
