Kaleidoscope Sound: Breakbot

I have always considered YouTube one of the best search engines ever. It has allowed me to find hidden musical gems and beautiful videos. On one of my quests, I found one of the most stunning musical videos I‰’ve ever seen; It consisted of a stop-motion with 2,000 aquarelles painted one after another. Not only was the video absolutely flawless, but the accompanying music was extremely catchy and danceable. The amount of funk and disco in this song is ridiculous.

This is how I heard my first Breakbot song, “Baby I‰’m Yours,” and ever since it‰’s been stuck in my mind.

France has always been known for having the best DJs around (Daft Punk, Busy P, Justice, Stardust, Ìätienne de CrÌ©cy, Cassius). Breakbot forms part of this legendary line up for electronic music, adding into it more funk and giving the term “nu-disco‰” a real meaning.

Thibaut Berland (better known as Breakbot) started studying computer graphics, giving him the opportunity to explore the world of audiovisuals and advertisement. Yet, his passion rested on mixing music. He started to gain fame in the music community by doing remixes to various DJs such as Justice, Chromeo and Digitalism. The remix that launched him into the spotlight was Justice’s “Let There Be Light,” which was later on included in their Water of Nazareth EP released at Japan. As well, Breakbot’s remix for PNAU‰’s “Baby‰” was featured in the all-time favorite game Gran Turismo 5. However, his groundbreaking hit “Baby, I‰’m Yours‰” placed him on the top charts of European electronic music.

Breakbot has toured the world with his funky beats and heavy basslines. Not only has he been part of iconic techno festivals like but he has headed the lineup for his record label Ed Banger Records’ anniversary party with Justice, Busy P, Uffie and Mr.Oizo. He preformed a one-hour DJ set mixing his best songs including most of his just released album, several of his past remixes and the all time favorite “Baby I‰’m Yours‰Û.

The funk/nu-disco god is currently on tour and precisely tonight he is playing D.C.‘s U Street staple U Street Music Hall. Haerts, an unknown yet promising New Yorker band is opening for him. This show is sure to be D.C.‰’s biggest funk dance party full of soulful tunes and get-yo-funky-moves-on vibrations. If only it wasn’t sold out.
