WVAU’s #10 song of 2014: Ty Segall – "Feel"

Ty Segall‰’s last full length, 2013’s Sleeper, was an acoustic album, a departure from his usual heavily distorted guitars. Well for those out there who missed the electric guitar, it returned on “Feel,” but keeping some elements from the last album.

“Feel” starts off with acoustic guitar, bass and drums. The electric guitar enters and gets more and more distorted as it progresses. The fuzz escalates as the solo starts. Then there‰’s a groovy drum break going on, which goes into the climax of the song. Heavy guitars and drums crash in and Ty chants in falsetto, “Feel, feel, feel, feel…‰” which goes into the grungiest guitar solo that I‰’ve heard in a long time till the song‰’s ending. The acoustic guitar in the song adds attack to the heavily distorted guitars, giving it a very thick and rich tone.

This year’s  Manipulator was a fairly diverse album, with a lot of both acoustic and electric elements, and “Feel‰” was the definite standout. This is the song you want to hear when you go see a Ty Segall show. I was there for it, and it was incredible. When Ty belts out the last couple “feels” on that high note and it goes right into the best guitar solo of 2014, it gets you going. Feel.
