With the start of the semester kicking into full gear I thought I would write about an artist that I like to listen to when I seriously need to focus on my work without the distraction of lyrics that I have memorized and beats that take me away from my work. I was never really a fan of instrumental music like this until I started to listen to this band.

I can‰’t remember how I stumbled upon The Echelon Effect, it was either spotify or bandcamp, but since finding them a while ago I have remained a fan. The band started in 2009 with one member, David Walters, who does everything, posting tracks on MySpace that attracted an audience.

The Echelon Effect‰’s claimed influences are “Sigur Ros, Appleseed Cast, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Album Leaf, Jens Voigt, American IPA beer‰” and identify their genre as “Post-Rock Ambience and Atmos‰Û. The Echelon Effect is a UK based band that puts their music out on Spotify, bandcamp, and apple music; all digital platforms with no physical CDs for their music. I guess this is a result of them being found on the internet, through MySpace, they decided to continue to offer this music online.

I think a good place to start listening to The Echelon Effect is by going through their 4 part “Seasons‰” EPs, it is where I started and will give you an idea of the kind of music that they make. If you are looking for a one song recommendation “Tracking Aeroplanes‰” from “Field Recordings‰” is one of their most popular songs. It is an almost 8 minute instrumental track that is very soft, relaxing, and calming.

Their most recent album, “Signals‰Û, was released in June of 2017 and carries their same calming instrumental music while being different from what they have released before, so I do recommend giving that a listen if you get the chance.

Ultimately I wrote about The Echelon Effect because I have loved them and listened to them for a very long time and want more people to know about it and enjoy their music, so even if it‰’s the one song that I linked here give it a chance because I think it’s so good that people will like it regardless of their preferred genre.
