To Hurt or Not To Hurt‰Û_

We are going to go a little mainstream with the music this week. But this album was just released so it seems appropriate. I am looking at one specific song from the album but you should definitely listen to the entire album as it is fairly well done. I wanted to discuss The Weeknd because most of his songs focus on the concept of darkness which is very rare and unique. Many singers avoid incorporating these ideas into their music because they worry it can affect them in their personal lives. But, for The Weeknd, he’s truly genuine and sincere through his music in every song he makes. This is the way he feels in real life and he expresses all of his true emotions, feelings, and thoughts in his songs which we as fans appreciate. This also makes it more addicting to listen to his songs. It helps us as listeners to feel his pain and emotions he’s going through. It serves as a way to connect with these icons that we otherwise will most likely not meet or ever know. Honestly, it is the only way to feel the emotions of these icons in our lives through their artwork.

This song is fairly easy to understand what the meaning is. The persona does not want someone he knows and who loves him to get close to him. He cannot handle relationships and will only end up hurting the individual. I have always found it interesting that even if we love someone and do not want to hurt them, we still do hurt them. Not on purpose but we still hurt the ones we love. That logically makes no sense. If you love someone and don‰’t want to hurt them, it‰’s simple, you don‰’t hurt them. And, yet, here we are. Because we do end up hurting them. Human beings just have to be so complicated.

Anyways, the song is thought provoking as is most of the album which has quite an interesting name. It‰’s called My Dear Melancholy. So, the entire album is pretty sad as implied by the title. This album made me think of a film that I believe is essentially like a good pairing. It‰’s called Melancholia. Which is a film about an approaching doomsday but has a deeper meaning of depression and what it does and how it can affect people. It‰’s a love it or hate it film. But this new album seems like a perfect match for this film. I highly recommend both listening to this song and this new album but also watching this film.

Have a lovely day, my little hippies!
