Sounds of Spanish guitar with twists of heavy metal, rock, and flamenco will be filling the halls of The Anthem this Wednesday, October 6th, as Mexican acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela make their DC stop on the By Request tour. Joined by Mexican songwriter Silviana Estrada, this show is bound to be an experience unlike any other.
Rodrigo y Gabriela, composed of Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero, are a groundbreaking instrumental duo who met in Mexico City and began their career in Dublin, Ireland. Their music takes inspiration from both the traditional latin rhythms they grew up surrounded by in Mexico and the heavy metal that lead Rodrigo and Gabriela to connect, making for some of the most interesting and dynamic acoustic guitar songs around.
Critics and fans adore them, and they have the awards and chart success to prove it. In their early career, their debut album outsold both the Arctic Monkeys and Johnny Cash in Ireland, taking the number one spot on the charts. Additionally, just this past year, they were awarded a Grammy for their album Mettavolution, for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.
Rodrigo shreds on his guitar, playing lead and carving intricate melodies; while Gabriela plays rhythm guitar and percussion at the same time, by hitting the guitar to create the beats to their songs. In doing so they almost transcend the limitations of their own instruments, producing music that transforms the listener to somewhere different entirely. After all, they are a soundtrack staple, first having appeared on the Breaking Bad soundtrack in 2009, followed by other high profile movies and television shows such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Puss in Boots, and even Monday Night Football.
Rodrigo y Gabriela will be playing at The Anthem on October 6th. Tickets start at $35 and can be bought here, doors open at 6:30 pm. You can listen to their music on your streaming platform of choice.
