Welcome back to Musical Personalities, a column where I analyze how my friends’ music tastes match their personalities. This week, I am analyzing my friend K.C’s top three songs. I have known K.C for 13 years and she has never once failed to be there for me and the people around her. K.C has an extremely bubbly personality and has always had the ability to instantly make friends with anyone. When she loves, she loves hard and always stands up for her friends especially when they won’t themselves, and is always there to cheer you up or listen and comfort you as you rant, and these songs definitely represent that.

RUNAWAY W ME – Warren Hue

The number one phrase I would use to describe this song is dreamy fun. Musically, it has a very dreamy slow beginning, with softer instruments and vocals for the chorus before it slowly adds more electronic sounds building up to the first verse which has a very fun faster rhythm than the choruses. One of my favorite parts of this song is the funky electronic instrumental break between the bridge and verse 2, including some slightly gritty guitar sounds in the later half of it. Overall this song is very fun and definitely radiates fun summertime vibes. It gives me the feeling of high expectations for a fun summer road trip running away from real everyday life to a city like L.A, driving down the warm streets during the sunset with ice cream. This coordinates well with K.C, since she is at school in L.A right now, and has a lot of ambitions and high expectations, but in an inspirational independent way. This song sounds just like the multitude of slightly unrealistic trips we have planned together over the years, like hopeful escapism through daydreams, K.C’s favorite.

Açaí Bowl – Dominic Fike

This song also has a very slow start, with gentle guitar and background vocals that complement the faint effect on Dominic’s voice making it sound a bit older. Then, the beats kick in for the verse, just like in the previous song. K.C seems to really like songs with slower vibey choruses and rap verses. One of the differences in this song is the bridge, which gets slower and quieter, some of the instruments dropping out. This song feels flowy, like slowly driving on a cool summer night with the windows down, looking out at the lights of a city and reminiscing on all the people you have met. This song is very sentimental in a subtle way, especially with the peaceful ending of violin and guitar. It feels like genuine connection, commitment in a way that is more natural and realistic, the kind worth waiting for, which K.C deserves. This song depicts raw natural love, the kind of peaceful love K.C radiates to those around her.

Feels Like – Gracie Abrams

This song feels a bit more vulnerable than the other two, depicting limitless genuine friendship. It also has a very slow and vulnerable beginning, depicting the singer’s insecurities and fears of loneliness. Feels Like builds up energy for the chorus with some rhythm and adding more instruments, slows down again for the 2nd verse, then builds up again for the next chorus and verse, creating an ebb and flow like someone telling a story of a trip. This song feels like reading a sweet YA novel depicting deep connection, friends supporting each other through everything at all the right times, with a feeling of belonging and knowing that even with some distance and time, this friend will always be there for everything, just like K.C is for me. The stripped down outro of this song really adds to this sense of vulnerability, but in a comforting way, like showing your real self to someone you know will listen and comfort you, even if they are pretty different from you and can’t understand exactly what you’re feeling.

Overall, these songs match incredibly well with how I see K.C. An incredible, dependable friend sparkling with amazing dreams and love that radiates out to everyone around her. These songs are fun yet genuine, perfect for the upcoming spring weather Thanks for reading!
