Now Playing: You’re Going Through a Phase and You Need Help
We’ve all been there—you’re going through a phase, and you just can’t seem to escape the same music you’ve been listening to for days, weeks, months (years?) on end. I’m right there with you. The people who follow me on Spotify are probably tired of seeing me listen to My Chemical Romance every hour of every day by now. I needed a playlist reset just as much as the next person. Sometimes, Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” doesn’t make the cut, and who even knows what Apple Music users have? Anyhow, your savior is here. Read on for this week’s Now Playing: playlist reset.
Fall Girl Vibes. Forgive me; it’s October, and I just couldn’t have a Now Playing: without some songs that make me feel like I’m the main character of a 1990s rom-com. I am that girl with a Fall playlist, and yes it does include the song “Sweater Weather.” Let me live my life. This week, I think I succeeded in songs that still feel like Fall without being in your face Fall. Here are my fall picks:
- “Green” by Sarah Kinsley
- “Road Head” by Japanese Breakfast
- “Simulation Swarm” by Big Thief
- “Pristine” by Snail Mail
- “Amoeba” by Clairo
- “Clouds” by BORNS
- “Drugs” by M.A.G.S.
Indie and Soft Rock. You can never go wrong with some solid indie music with some soft rock sprinkled in. I consider them to be aux-friendly songs—no one can get mad when I play Mitski, right? Probably? These made the cut:
- “The Only Heartbreaker” by Mitski
- “The Walk Home” by Young the Giant
- “Off My Mind” by joe p
- “American Boyfriend” by Kevin Abstract
- “At the End of the Day” by Wallows
- “Telescope” by Cage The Elephant
- “Feel It All The Time” by Soccer Mommy
- “Don’t Delete The Kisses” by Wolf Alice
Rock (question mark?). I’ll call this category “rock” in the loosest degree. It’s a little bit of this, a little bit of that, you know what I mean? Side note: every Now Playing: I make, I just can’t stay away from My Chemical Romance or Pierce the Veil. It doesn’t matter what vibe I’m going for, what other songs I include, I will always stay loyal—no playlist is complete without a little Gerard Way or Vic Fuentes. Also, some oldies will always be strewn in there. That you can always count on! Headbangers await:
- “This Is Why” by Paramore (their new single!!)
- “Bedless” by Pierce the Veil
- “Another One Bites The Dust” by Queen
- “All My Love” by Led Zeppelin
- “Disasterology” by Pierce the Veil
- “Adventure of a Lifetime” by Coldplay (yes—Coldplay is still relevant to me, ok?)
- “Planetary (GO!)” by My Chemical Romance
- “Bulletproof Love” by Pierce the Veil
Dancy Songs. I’m talking disco, new wave, random up-beat-and-gotta-get-up-and-dance kind of songs here. It’s fun to go from a random soft girl rock song to disco to hard rock to shoegaze in one playlist, if you’re catching my vibe. That’s how we keep things exciting. Keeps you on your toes. Just a few on this week’s playlist, but great ones nonetheless:
- “Feel Good Inc.” by Gorillaz
- “Valerie” by TV Girl
- “I Love The Nightlife (Disco ‘Round)” by Alicia Bridges
- “Drop The Pilot” by Joan Armatrading
- “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles (fun fact: I had this on my 8th birthday party CD party favor that I handed out at the roller rink)
- “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps
Russian Roulette. This is the kind of song that you’re either going to skip every single time or vibe with. Songs like these are what’s so fun about a song dump playlist—you can put whatever you want on it. Songs you’ve just re-discovered, songs with the nostalgia aspect, and songs you’d never normally put on the aux, but now that you have, you’re glad you did. Stay safe out there:
- “All For You” by Sister Hazel
- “A Man Without Love” by Engelbert Humperdinck (yup, that’s his name) • “Mean” by Taylor Swift
- “Running Up That Hill” by Car Seat Headrest
- “It’s My Life” by No Doubt
Songs I’ve Never Heard Before. Every Now Playing: must have at least a few songs that I’ve never heard before. Otherwise, how would I discover new songs? Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” does not always cut it for me. One of my favorite things to do is to find artists I already love and try to find songs by them I’ve never heard. I’ve included a few! Here are my new finds:
- “2042” by Japanese Breakfast
- “For Now” by Doom Mutual, Davis Gestiehr, and Daphne Browdy
- “Jump the Turnstile” by Jordana and TV Girl
- “Give Up Baby Go” by Peach Pit
- “For Love” by Lush
- “Who You Are” by Mannequin Pussy
- “High Hopes” by Sweet Pill
Honorable Mentions. Here I’ll list all the songs that I just couldn’t place in any of the categories I made up, but I wanted to mention them anyways. A couple R&B, a couple shoegaze, random genres scattered throughout. Every Now Playing: has about 50 songs in them, and there’s bound to be a bunch of randoms that stick out by the end! Here’s their own category:
- “Lavender Buds” by MF DOOM
- “Sea, Swallow Me” by Cocteau Twins and Harold Budd
- “Rose Blood” by Mazzy Star
- “Head Over Heels – Dave Bascombe 7” N.Mix” by Tears For Fears and Dave Bascombe • “Sanctuary” by Joji
- “Crybaby” by Lizzo
- “Rapp Snitch Knishes feat. Mr. Fantastik” by MF DOOM
- “Trees and Flowers” by Strawberry Switchblade
- “Charcoal Baby” by Blood Orange
