Superorganism – Concert Preview

October 27, 2022

Superorganism-a group of synergetically interacting organisms of the same species.

The band Superorganism lives up to its name’s definition. Formed in London in 2017,  the group is currently formed of 5 members: OJ, Tucan, Harry, B, and Soul. The band members span international origins across the United Kingdom, Australia, and the U.S. and started with collaborative songwriting over the internet. Eventually, most of the members moved to London and achieved their goal of forming a superorganism by collaborating to produce their signature breed of Indie/Electropop music.

The lead vocalist, Orono Noguchi, met the band members on a summer trip to Japan while in high school. She befriended them and was asked to add vocals to a new song they were playing with. Her lyrics were added to what would become “Something For Your M.I.N.D.” which blew up on TikTok in 2020. Ever since it has been featured in over 128,000 videos and has amassed tens of millions of views. The song was originally posted on SoundCloud and was Co-signed by Frank Ocean before being released by Domino Recording Co.

They have since released two albums and have been nominated for both the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards (Best Push) and Sweden’s GAFFA Awards (Best Foreign New Act). Their debut album Superorganism was released in March of 2018 and their sophomore album, World Wide Pop this past July. Both albums feature a psychedelic, almost video game-esque sound. Kitschy sound effects like snoring, car horns, and bird calls as well as audio filters on the backing vocals reverberate through all their songs. Their music will feel nostalgic to listeners who grew up watching 2010s Cartoon Network shows like The Amazing World of Gumball. Overall, Superorganism is an electrifying, dynamic group that electrifies listeners with its strange but-energizing earworms.

Superorganism is playing Friday, November 4th at the 9:30 Club. Doors open at 10 pm and the concert starts at 11 pm. Tickets are still available and can be found here. There are currently no COVID restrictions or vaccination card requirements, but policies are subject to change with local guidelines. 9:30 Club is an all-ages venue but requires a valid government ID to purchase drinks.
