Concert Preview: flipturn at Black Cat 11/12

November 8, 2022

Flipturn is an indie band from Florida self-described as creating music for “endless summers, sun-streaked days, and introspective nights”. Built out of a Fernandina Beach garage, the band consists of Dillon Basse on lead vocals and guitar, Tristan Duncan on lead guitar, Madeline Jarman on bass, Mitch Fountain on synth, and Devon VonBalson on drums.

Starting out in 2015, flipturn has now amassed over 60 million streams on Spotify. Their following has grown from their various independent projects which include songs such as “August” and “Chicago”, some of the band’s biggest hits. Releasing their first EP in 2017 independently, the band continued to release independent EPs in 2018 and 2020 before signing to Dualtone Records.

Following other artists of the modern indie scene, flipturn has recently joined Dualtone to amplify the release of their debut album Shadowglow. The 14 song album provides a “snapshot of the band caught halfway between youthful optimism and adult precision.” Songs like “Sad Disco” and “Goddamn” follow that band’s classic upbeat indie sound while “Hollow” and “Orbit” provide a more stripped down instrumental track for the album. A listen to Shadowglow is a trip into modern indie perfection coupled with synth bass lines and raw vocals from Basse. The project is able to capture the feeling of summer longing, introspection, and growth through its lyricism and breaks in traditional instrumentation. The band combines their steady guitar riffs and drum beat with harmonies during their choruses to create a collection of some of their best songs and a promising career following their debut album.

Flipturn will be stopping in DC for their Shadowglow tour on November 12th with support from The Brazen Youth at Black Cat. Tickets are currently sold out but check back here for more updates. Doors open at 8pm and the venue is open to all ages. Those over 21 must provide a valid photo id if they plan on drinking alcohol. There are currently no COVID restrictions in place; information regarding COVID policies can be found here.
