Now Playing: Changing the Rhythm

May 4, 2023

Now Playing: Change the Rhythm

Some4mes, we find ourselves stuck in a music rut. We become accustomed to shuffling  whatever playlist we see first, but we don’t really listen to it. Maybe you didn’t even realize that  I’m talking about you un4l now. It happens to us all; and, especially during a trying 4me like  this—jump scare, it’s final exam 4me—music becomes noise. I know for me, I’ll play some playlist of mine, but I’ll find that I can’t recall the last couple songs I listened to when I really  think about it. This week, the last thing I wanted was to make a Now Playing: that featured only  the music I’ve been listening to on repeat. This week, I didn’t want to deliver a monotonous tone. It’s 4me to change the rhythm and find something to look forward to, because I think we  all need a liMle of that right now. Here’s ten to get you started:

  • “The Breaking Hands” by The Gun Club
  • “Kenan Vs. Kel” by JPEGMAFIA
  • “That Life” by Unknown Mortal Orchestra
  • “Wake Me up to Drive” by Big Thief
  • “Airbag” by Radiohead
  • “Diving Woman” by Japanese Breakfast
  • “SPIT IN MY FACE!” by ThxSoMch
  • “Where to Start” by Bully
  • “Smile” by Wolf Alice
  • “Fast in My Car” by Paramore

Usually, I split my Now Playing: into five different sec4ons with ten songs each. Each sec4on receives a sort of clever (well, I think I’m clever) naming scheme for whatever theme or category  I decide to feature. This week, I thought I would be doing these select songs a disservice if I tried to pigeonhole them into only five categories. Thus, I separated them by no rhyme nor  reason, and dispersed them throughout the ar4cle, just to break it up a bit. I took my self assigned mission of “changing the rhythm” literally—I’m not sure I’ve ever made a Now Playing:  this diverse, and it seemed only appropriate for the prompt. The weather can’t make up its  mind—cold or hot, hot or cold, who knows what it’s going to be—so why should I?

  • “Angelica” by Wet Log
  • “The Void” by Spiritbox
  • “What Am I Missing” by The Band CAMINO
  • “Glue Song (feat. Clairo)” by beabadoobee
  • “I’m So Hot” by Chrissy Chlapecka
  • “Neon Moon” by CigareMes Ader Sex
  • “Crazy Bitch” by Buckcherry
  • “CASUALTY” by MOTHICA
  • “Say It” by Maggie Rogers
  • “Fun Tonight” by Lady Gaga

I combed through my liked songs, dug through my most ancient playlists, and refreshed my  recommended many 4mes to get to this point in the playlist-making process. I’m happy to  report that I have a playlist for you to shuffle and then quite literally get the most shuffled  response. Honestly, you probably don’t even have to shuffle to change the rhythm. Just play and  listen. This week, your headphones or your speaker will spit out anything from R&B to new  wave to metal to rock to indie to pop, and it’s refreshing. Feeling manic? Feeling 4red? Feeling  uninspired? There’s a song to remedy any problem, any emo4on.

  • “Halah” by Mazzy Star
  • “Who Loves the Sun” by The Velvet Underground
  • “Slow Ride” by Sublime
  • “Breath Deeper” by Tame Impala
  • “You Make Loving Fun” by Fleetwood Mac
  • “It’s Too Late” by Lucy Dacus
  • “Wolf” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
  • “E-Pro” by Beck
  • “Sunset For The Dead” by Tommy Newport
  • “We Are Happy Landfill” by Gorillaz

I love to share the things that make me feel happy and whole with the world, and this week is  no different. I added countless ar4sts that I love on here, but I grabbed a song of theirs I felt was  either severely underappreciated or chronically overlooked. These are ar4sts such as Big Thief,  Wolf Alice, Paramore, Spiritbox (their new single!), Lady Gaga, Maggie Rogers, Pierce The  Veil…shall I go on? Addi4onally, I added a few jump scares—and by a few, I mean mainly one.  Bet you can’t guess! (Spoiler alert: it’s “Copacabana” by Barry Manilow. And no, I will not be  hearing any complaints.)

  • “Fear of Dying” by Poppy
  • “The Carpal Tunnel of Love” by Fall Out Boy
  • “Over Those Hills” by Hayley Williams
  • “3 Strange Days” by School of Fish
  • “PreMy Handsome Awkward” by The Used
  • “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan
  • “Three Man Weave” by Injury Reserve
  • “Sea Sick” by binki
  • “FORCE OF HABIT” by Paris Texas
  • “So Far So Fake” by Pierce The Veil

As usual, I wanted to provide a list of all the songs housed in the playlist on here before I send off any faithful listeners to pull up the actual playlist, just so you can get a taste of what’s to  come to change your rhythm. Good luck on exams, but don’t forget to take breaks for yourself.  Take a second, put on some tunes, eat a meal, drink some water. You’ve got this. Listen on and  enjoy!

  • “Spiderwebs” by No Doubt
  • “Bleed The Freak” by Alice in Chains
  • “Body Of Years” by Mother Mother
  • “MANTRA” by Bring Me The Horizon
  • “Pitch the Baby” by Cocteau Twins
  • “Copacabana” by Barry Manilow
  • “Control” by Mannequin Pussy
  • “NEW HEART DESIGN” by Turns4le
  • “In Too Deep” by Slow Pulp
  • “Balloon” by Crumb

As always, don’t forget to follow my playlist equivalent on Spo4fy, also called Now Playing:. The  username is @sabrina.capello, and the link is here.
