November Notes (EARWORM 2)

Is it a crime to listen to the same song 12 times in a row? If so, take me straight to the county jail and lock me away, because I would willingly do jail time for Remi Wolf’s cover of You First by Paramore.

The song is part of the album “Re: This is Why,” which is entirely composed of covers of Paramore’s 2023 release “This is Why.” The album features covers of every original song on the album by other notable indie artists like Julien Baker, The Linda Lindas, Bartees Strange, and Wet Leg. Remi Wolf’s You First, however, is the best one in the bunch. Wolf expertly mixes Paramore’s original sound with her own, resulting in pop-y vocals and epic guitar riffs. A key difference between the original and the cover is Remi Wolf’s use of harmonies, which is a hallmark of her unique vocal style. These harmonies are a powerful force, and I found myself noticing their absence. Don’t get me wrong – the original song is awesome. I’m just a sucker for Remi Wolf.

I know this is a music blog, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t shout-out some podcasts that I’ve been devouring. Recently, I have been listening to roughly a podcast episode each day, which adds up to more than seven hours each week. Apps like Airbuds should track podcast minutes, because I can’t be caught looking like a fool on podcast-heavy weeks. Anyways. The podcast Dr? Sheila is a great one. The beautifully hilarious Amy Poheler, America’s national treasure, hosts, and she plays a therapist who is not technically licensed (hence the Dr?). Each episode features a few of her fabulous friends, who play fictional characters seeking therapy from Dr? Sheila. Everybody should check it out. If you don’t already listen to Binchtopia, you’re late and you are missing out on some of the best pop culture insights currently available. Finally, Las Culturistas is a pod for the ages: Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers are simply on their own plane of existence, and we should consider ourselves lucky to bear witness to their banter.
