Prepare to get your groove on at WVAU’s first ever funk and jazz event, District Groove!

On Dec. 2 at 6 p.m., WVAU will host this night of funk and jazz in Battelle Atrium with featured performances from the American University Jazz Combo and Argo and the Violet Queens.

The AU Jazz Combo is a quintet made up entirely of American University student musicians. What you should be expecting from the combo is quite self-explanatory: some good ol’ fashioned jazz.

The AU Jazz Combo performs various gigs at AU as well as in the D.C. area. However, they also perform at the Bridge every other Monday at 2:30 p.m., so go check them out if you’re in the mood to hear jazz music played by members of our very own student body!

Taking inspiration from artists such as David Bowie and Brian Eno, Argo and the Violet Queens is a D.C.-based band that is bound to blow your mind with their psychedelic funk melodies.

As per their Spotify bio, the band describes their sound as “pensive and melancholic,” influenced by classic ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll. Their first two singles released this summer, “It was Late” and “East from Sunday,” undeniably validate this description, proving that this band is one that fans of psychedelic funk and surrealist music should keep a close eye on.

Argo and the Violet Queens regularly perform at various venues and events in the DMV, so check out their Instagram for further information on where and when they are performing next.

Remember to bring your AU ID, your friends, and your funkiest of dance moves to District Groove on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. It’s going to be the grooviest night of the semester, so make sure that you don’t miss it!
