WVAU Drinks Whiskey with Dom

General Manager

In a side alley next to the 9:30 Club WVAU DJs Dan Raby and Faith Masi met up with the members of the band Dom (Dom, Cosmo, Eric and Bobby K.) to chat before the band opened for The Go! Team. Dom shared their thoughts as well as their Old Grand-dad Whiskey.

WVAU: So for kids who don‰’t really know your music how would you describe your sound?

Dom: Gingercore new-wave with shimmering textures of post-punk

Cosmo: Throbbing guitars twisting and turning with waves of pop sounds (laughs)

WVAU: What‰’s the story behind how you all met and started Dom?

Dom: I was living in a house in Worcester, Massachusetts. I met Bobby there and we bonded over Alan Jackson and other country music and stuff. We knew the other guys from other stuff and it sort of just happened‰Û_ (he trailed off)

WVAU: How‰’d you get a Gucci remix for “Living in America?‰Û

Dom: They actually contacted us about it, but then it was put on the backburner and delayed for a while. Then all of the sudden it was back on. It was like a week before the face tattoo‰Û_

WVAU: The ice cream lightning strike.

Dom: Right (laughs). It was the perfect time for it.

WVAU: So now that you‰’ve had Gucci, who‰’s your dream collaboration?

Dom: J. Roddy Walston & The Business! They‰’re so heavy.

WVAU: What music are you listening to now on this tour?

Dom: King Tuff, Mariah Carey, The Replacements

Cosmo: I‰’m really into metal, so Sabbath is what I‰’m always listening to. Also The Rolling Stones.

Bobby: Yeah The Rolling Stones are always great.

(At this time an employee of the 9:30 Club comes out and sees the whiskey)

9:30 Guy: Is that alcohol?

Dom: No‰Û_ (quickly hides the whiskey behind his leg, once the guy disappears Dom passes the bottle to Bobby, who shoves it into his jacket pocket)

WVAU: How do you like touring with bands like The Go! Team and Ratatat?

Dom: This is one of our first shows with The Go! Team. We just started with them a few days ago. But it‰’s weird because we‰’re on so early. You go from playing 1am shows to being on at 8pm. We‰’re done so early! Ratatat was great, though, Mike and Evan know how to party. We had some great times with them.

WVAU: You‰’ve been labeled a “buzz band‰” by a lot of people. What do you think about that description?

Cosmo: Maybe a buzzed band (laughs)

Dom: Yeah, that‰’s what they meant! That‰’s a better way to describe us. No, like the buzz band thing is for blogs and shit to latch on to the new bands who have a few songs. It‰’s up to them to prove themselves after the press. I mean, we‰’ve got a major label deal now so I don‰’t think we can be considered that anymore.

WVAU: What‰’s going on with new music then? When are you going to prove yourself?

Dom: Our next album was pushed back but it should be coming out soon. We‰’ve got the next two EPs right after each other both done.

WVAU: Are they similar toåÊSun Bronzed Greek Gods?

Dom: Sorta, we have a few songs that sound like their off that album but we experimented a lot on the new stuff. We have this synth pop song and we did one like the Beach Boys used to do ‰ÛÒ going in the studio and just writing and recording the song.

WVAU: What kind of bands did you listen to while growing up?

Dom: Well I grew up loving country. Alan Jackson “It‰’s all right to be little bitty‰” but most of us just loved heavy metal. Black Sabbath and stuff.

WVAU: How did the Dom Party Line start?

Dom: I was doing acid in the back of my Friend‰’s Mini Coop convertible and we just thought it would be awesome doing a phone chat thing ‰ÛÒ like with sexting and stuff. We‰’ve given out tickets to shows ‰ÛÒ I think we gave out seven to this one ‰ÛÒ relationship advice, sexts, whatever.

WVAU: Relationship advice? How‰’d that go over?

Dom: Well it‰’s up to them to decide if they want to use my advice or not. I‰’m not liable.

WVAU: You‰’re like the indie Ask Abby.

Dom: (laughs) Exactly!

WVAU: Okay one last question and it‰’s the usual one. You‰’re on a deserted island and you bring one album and one song to play. What do you bring?

Dom: King Tuff‰’såÊWas Dead and Keyshia Cole‰’s “Love‰” for sure.

Cosmo: Master of Reality by Sabbath and “Under My Thumb‰” by the Rolling Stones

Eric: None.

WVAU: None?

Eric: You‰’ll get tired of hearing the same thing over and over. I don‰’t want to do that!

Bobby: Let It Be by the Replacements.

Dom: Oh that‰’s great! I‰’m changing my album to all of The Replacements‰’åÊTim.

Dom is currently on tour with the Go! Team. Here‰’s one of their best songs, which they played at the 9:30 club last Wednesday.
