Yoko gonna Yoko

I like to think I‰’m above simple “X gonna X‰” jokes, but, seriously, how else can you try and describe Yoko Ono‰’s music? There are tracks on here that are almost impossible to get a read on, just Yoko reading/singing/screaming her robo-beatnik poetry over weird ambient soundscapes. It‰’s a lot more fun when she performs actual songs, like the Black Sabbath-esque anti-war tune “Chesire Cat Cry,‰” Lou Reed style ode to New York “N.Y. Noodle Town,‰” old west saloon tune “Leaving Tim‰” and baroque pop inferno of the title track. Yoko plays with dance music and electronica a bit on this record, resulting in their songs (“Bad Dancer,‰” “7th Floor,‰” “Shine, Shine‰Û) that would sound at home on an LCD Soundsystem album. I wouldn‰’t necessarily recommend the full album, but it is worth skimming; its stylings are so diverse, your bound to find something that‰’ll reel you in. Plus, it‰’s kind of interesting to view it as a piece of abstract art, a sort of confused and depressed reaction by one of the peace and love generation‰’s figureheads living in what she views as the consumerist war machine that is the United States. At least I think so.
