Harsh takes on old classics

This is not Nina Simone. These may be Nina Simone songs, but they are nowhere even close to what you would recognize as the legendary singers originals. Completely redone by avant rockers Xiu Xiu, they are now stripped down, harsh, and utterly depressing dirges. This, however, isn‰’t all bad, as such an odd take on such classics can often breathe new life into a track you thought well-trodden. The instrumentation consists mainly of a gasping horns section which blares over every track, complimented by frontman Jamie Stewart‰’s breathy whisper of a voice. The voice is going to be the key deciding factor here for most listeners, as his wavering, soft delivery can be engaging and arresting for some listeners, but can be an absolute nightmare for those expecting the smooth contralto tones of Simone. Ultimately, Nina is far from an easy listen, but for those well acquainted with Xiu Xiu‰’s previous efforts, there is nothing here that should put you off from listening from this truly odd covers album.
