For being tagged with the unfortunate genre descriptor of ‰post-rock‰’, a genre so often defined by its swelling crescendos into explosive climaxes, Mogwai, on their latest effort, very much lack the huge eruptions that someone would have expected from the genre. Rather, much like their previous album Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will, Mogwai opt for a more relaxed approach, more so defined by its krautrock influences in which the tracks seeth and move from one place to another, never quite exploding. This is not to say the album is boring, however, as the album generally succeeds in maintaining enough momentum to keep things interesting. Electronic elements such as synthesizer and vocoder compliment the expected ‰standard‰’ rock percussion, giving the vibe of 70‰’s movie soundtrack at points. While this may not be Mogwai‰’s strongest album, and is certainly not the singular work by which they will be remembered, this is an enjoyable collection of tracks which remain mostly interesting throughout their entirety, and hardcore Mogwai fans should certainly not be disappointed.
