Camera2 - Appetite EP (Self-Released)

Angsty synth-heavy indie pop

At their best, Camera2 make beautifully layered, impossibly catchy, dancefloor-ready synth-pop. Songs like “Appetite” and “Freak Show,” the first two on their new EP, reveal the band’s bright and infectious grooviness. In both of these songs, though, there’s a lurking darkness hidden among the airy synths. However, when the band delves further into this darkness, as they do on the second half of this EP, they’re less successful. Though their darker synth melodies set a perfect tone, these songs tend to be taken over by the sophomoric lyrics and end up sounding kind of cheesy. Musically, though, these darker, slower songs show that while catchy pop might be their bread and butter, they can still make mellow, darker synth-scapes as well.
