Eagulls - Eagulls (Partisan)

Richard Murphy

Loud, sweaty post-punk

This is the kind of music that should never be played in a room bigger than the Black Cat, it would just sound off. UK-based Eagulls specialize in a grimy, bass driven brand of aggressive post-punk with songs that aim to get in, kick-ass, and get out, with little fuss in-between. The bass and drums here are the key to Eagulls success, providing a fat, driving force that provide the energy for which frontman George Frontman can snarl and bark his misgivings over just about everything. This is complemented by the angular guitar playing that blends into the background when it needs to, and cuts through the mix for truly maximum impact. All the songs here conjure up images of sweaty, shouting, and excessively stylish youths‰’ with perfectly coiffed hair, all jammed into a space that is simultaneously the most uncomfortable place imaginable, and yet the only place this stuff can really ever go down. These are energetic, well written punk tracks for the cynical 80‰’s new wave kid in all of us.
