Tomas Barfod - Pulsing EP (Secretly Canadian)

Richard Murphy

Simple yet infectious dance tracks

Thomas Barfod has been making sleek electronic music in one group or another for years now, developing a proficient, straightforward style that placed heavy emphasis on solid vocal hooks and dance-till-you-die beats, a style Tomas sticks to for about half of Pulsing, his latest EP. His experience in the genre shows, and when he sticks to his strengths, his ability to make no nonsense dance music that has floating vocal melodies that will stick with you for days shines through. The two tracks in which Tomas collaborates with vocalists (“Pulsing‰” and “Happy‰Û) go without a hitch, with its no frills approach to dance-pop working creating an environment of sultry, house-tinged grooves that are smooth as silk. The other two tracks on the EP are atmospheric in nature and, while somewhat interesting to listen to in the moment, will likely go in one ear and out the other. That being said, that dance oriented tracks here are incredibly effective despite their simplicity, and the pure gut feeling of solid hook is truly undeniable.
