Broken Gold - Residency At Hundo Beach (End Sounds)

Sean Meehan

Super rich punchy power-pop.

When Broken Gold went to record Residency At Hundo Beach, they started with around 40 demos. Though the EP ended up being only six tracks, each track is so dense and rich that it seems like they just squeezed all 40 demos into the six songs. The EP is tight, loud, and fast, with only a couple songs that overstay their welcome (“Life of the Machine” and “Let Go”). With the exception of these two slower, more emotional songs, the album is a shining example that pop punk can be great. Band leader Ian McDougall has a knack for writing extremely catchy, head-banging choruses. Everyone else, for their part, fills his tunes with a huge sound of powerful guitars and lightning-fast, cymbol-heavy drumming. The album rarely deviates from the typical song structure, choosing instead perfect the format. The band’s poppiest tune “Green Grass,” is a radio-ready rock that is just begging to blast from cars in high school parking lots across the country.
