ODESZA have been making a name for themselves in the past few years as some of the foremost purveyors of starry eyed, blissful chillwave, a style they stick to with little deviation on their sophomore project, In Return.

For fans of this particularly pleasant subgenre of electronic music, there‰’s a lot here to like. The synths are the sonic equivalent of a sunny afternoon, every vocal feature sounds as if its done by an angel, and there is heavenly quality to the atmospheres that ODESZA creates, displaying their mastery of the chillwave style.

For everybody else, however, this is well trodden ground, heard before in the music of producers like Washed Out and Tycho, with ODESZA providing little in the way of innovation. Additionally, ODESZA tend to go for atmosphere more than songwriting in the majority of the tracks here, making the songs an easy listen, but with little that will actually stick with you in terms of melody. In Return is an extremely competent and enjoyable slice of feel good, summery electronic music, but is just too familiar to be truly great.
