Commanding nocturnal blues.

The title to Cooly G‰’s latest full length effort, Wait ‘Til Night, should be taken as a command as much as you should take it as simply a title, as this record seems only to exists between twilight and the break of dawn. There‰’s a particular sense of nocturnal sensuality enveloping every inch of this record in the form of airy synthesizers and often whisper quiet vocals tantalizing the listener with suggestive lyricism.

When these elements come together, the night time vibes of Cooly G are subtly engaging and work to hypnotize the audience in a sort of erotic dream state. Unfortunately for Cooly G, on Wait Till Night, the vibe works about as often as it doesn‰’t, and when it misses, the sex appeal of this record turns into a sluggish and meandering mess.

The style and look that the music puts forth is often enough to carry it, and the “alt-R&B‰” leanings have style in spades, but it seems like the songwriting suffers because of it.

For a record put out by the electronic landscape-defining Hyperdub Records, this is an exceptionally tepid release, but for those who are unaware of the long shadow of the record label, you might find something to enjoy.
