Live in the Hive: Alex G

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to catch Alex G during his month-long fall tour with Gardens & Villa. It seems like the precocious Philadelphian has been touring nonstop ever since his most recent album DSU (a sure contender for album of the year) brought him legions of new fans.

On record Alex G creates a strange, bittersweet mix of indie pop and headphone folk, with his Elliott Smith-like whispers floating across layers of pretty guitar, off-kilter piano and brushed drums (all played by Alex). On tour, with the help of three talented and awesome friends, his sound is transfigured into an explosive indie rock sound reminiscent of Built to Spill, with crashing cymbals and screaming leads intensifying Alex’s economical songwriting.

we had a great time hanging out with the fearsome foursome in the studio when they visited us on their way to the Rock & Roll Hotel in October. Listen below for their performance of DSU‘s “Black Hair”, some choice selections from Alex’s previous album and station favorite Trick, and an interview during which the band opens up about their favorite TDR meals.
