Lavender‰’s “You Are In The Right Place‰” – Charming, Polished Indie Pop That Hits Home (Literally)

RIYL: The 1975, Wolf Alice, The Naked and Famous

Local garage pop band Lavender have released their debut EP, entitled, “You Are In The Right Place.‰” The EP is aptly named, as the four tracks it contains are packed with atmospheric synths and uplifting guitar riffs. Lyrically, the EP has a wistful, fresh-faced feel, while the overall sound is mature and organized. Well-placed guitar solos and rolling drum beats give an illusion that the EP swells and contracts as it progresses, most notably on the opening track, “Dangerous Game.‰” The second track, “Berlin,‰” is more cinematic, utilizing more backing vocals and cymbal crashes that create an atmosphere of immediacy. “Do you remember / how it felt when we were young?‰” lead vocalist Emily Carlson asks on the third track, “Moving Fast,‰” creating an air of nostalgia that contributes to the themes of tenderheartedness found throughout the album. The track breaks down with faster-paced drums and loud backing vocals that make it one of the dancier songs on the EP. “Short on Time‰” closes the album, offering an ending as sugary-sweet as the band‰’s name. “You Are In The Right Place‰” is a smart, fun debut that brandishes its refined indie pop feel with a sophistication of sound and undeniable charisma.

Based out of DC, Lavender is composed entirely of American University alumni, including Trent Burns (guitar), Emily Carlson (lead vocals), Matt Wright (drums), and Alli Vega (guitar). Other Lavender/AU alum include Sophie Borddoff (lead vocals) and Sam Krause (guitar). This past summer, Lavender supported Wolf Alice at Rock n‰’ Roll Hotel. They will play Above the Bayou on November 11th.
