Planetarium: Music that Feels like Floating in Space

April 10, 2023

Looking to escape your current reality? Inspired by this playlist, here are some neo-psychedelic albums and songs to make you feel like you’re floating in space.

Currents – Tame Impala (Album)

Tame Impala’s Currents is well known as a neo-psychedelic masterpiece, still relevant today though it was released in 2015.

Let it Happen is a song about letting go of control and learning not to fear change, a song that in a way represents the whole album. The band’s Kevin Parker said of the track, “It’s a powerful feeling when you realize that ‘this is happening’. There are things that are changing, sometimes without your consent. When that happens it’s quite a powerful thing, so much so that it felt like the whole album could be based around that feeling.”

New Person, Same Old Mistakes is a hard hitting track about falling into the same patterns over and over again, but if you pay attention to the addicting synthesized melody instead of the lyrics you might find yourself exploring another dimension.

You Will Never Know Why – Sweet Trip (Album)

You Will Never Know Why seems to follow the same themes as Currents, as the album is about not knowing why things happen to you.

Lay face up on the floor and press play on Air Supply and you will feel like your soul is being lifted out of your body toward the ceiling. While heavily synthesized, the song feels light and airy, not too heavily electronic.

Milk has an interesting backstory, a song about an insomniac jealous that their lover is asleep while they cannot. The insomniac laments “you will drift away,” which feels like a reference to a more dramatic separation, though the subject of the song is only falling asleep.

Always Forever – Cults

Always Forever is about enduring love, and captures the feeling of a strong and lasting bond. The song is repetitive and catchy, though it still has a melancholic feeling.

Locket – Crumb

The synthesized melody at the beginning of Locket feels like something from another planet. This single from Crumb’s EP was released in 2017 and saw a surge in popularity when it went viral on TikTok.
