This past Saturday I spent my afternoon in glorious Georgetown, surrounded by bermuda pink shorts and a wave of mint green accessories. Now this might not be the cup of tea for everyone, but I‰’ve come to appreciate Georgetown and enjoy my 30N bus ride to get there.

So let‰’s pretend you‰’re here with me during this humid Saturday afternoon in Georgetown. We just got off the 30N on M Street, and we already feel the cluster and warmth of people walking all around us. There‰’s so many people, so many faces, going so fast but it all feels like organized chaos.

Now let‰’s say we pay for an overpriced cupcake and make our way down to the Georgetown Waterfront. We see “These sidewalks liquid then stone / Building walls and an old pay phone / It rings like all through the daylight.‰Û

We flow through the crowds of people, synchronized movement. The sky is an overcast grey, but there is glimmer of sunlight throughout our walk. We pass through elegant hotels and ideal homes, symmetrical and organized. This part feels like pure rhythm, each passing house fits together, like pieces in a puzzle.

We finally make it down to the water, of course passing the local Georgetown preppy that remind you of that feeling you thought you‰’d forgotten, the entire self-titled Vampire Weekend album.

We see happy children playing with the ducks.

We see the glistening water move in and out, making this expensive urban jungle feel a little bit more serene.

And here‰’s the thing. I love to make fun of the Georgetown yuppie archetype, but there‰’s more to Georgetown than that. The place may just feel like a congestion of rich white people, but if you go to the right places and feel the cadence, the heartbeat of the city, you can really enjoy your time in Georgetown.

This neighborhood exudes happiness, even when I‰’m not feeling particularly happy. Here‰’s a playlist of songs that remind me of Georgetown and bring my that feeling of euphoria.

Every neighborhood in D.C. is different, but what makes Georgetown, Georgetown, isn‰’t the pastel colors and designer brands, it‰’s the symmetry and rhythm in the streets, the movement that‰’s oh so present there. And during our entire day, we felt like the Holy Roman Empire was rooting for us.
