Concert Preview: Geordie Greep @ Black Cat on 9/20

Chimpanzee enthusiast and musician Geordie Greep brings his maximalist jazz-rock solo act to the Black Cat on Saturday, Sept. 20, his first time performing solo in the District after skipping it on his first United States tour earlier this year.

Greep’s inscrutably-accented show-tune voice accompanies glimmering brass and a variegated percussion section, which he puts to work in a live show dominated by sprawling instrumental breaks. After he races through lyrical portraits of pathetic, delusional and depraved characters, his already-formidable songs extend into lengthy jam sessions.

“The New Sound,” Greep’s debut solo album, released last October to popular and critical acclaim. Before, he fronted the English prog-rock band Black Midi, which has been compared to King Crimson and Slint. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online for $36.72 before day of show or $30 with cash at the box office. On Saturday, prices rise to $38.78 and $32 respectively. No opener is listed.
