70s-esque groovy soulful and soft indie rock

Singer-songwriter Matthew E. White is back with his second album after releasing his debut Big Inner three years ago. White‰’s music is reminiscent of 70‰’s soft rock and soul music with a great retro vibe to it. White‰’s voice is typically soothing and soft, while the combination of the guitars, pianos, horns, and female backing vocals all come together well. The album is also influenced by R&B, gospel, and psychedelic music, making it a bit difficult to pin down genre-wise. The song‰’s lyrics reflect a variety of themes and moods, with some of them being personal or spiritual in nature, while others are related to current events such as the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman or sex abuse in the church. Recommended for anyone who enjoys 70‰’s soft rock and soul music, or indie rock with soft/soulful vocals.
