Zen Palette: Why Mothica Is My Non-Problematic Fave (and Other Feminist Musings)

To continue on with my female producer and girl power-infused articles, I decided to write about one of my faves this week: Mckenzie Ellis, known as Mothica. I love this girl and I probably favorite every single one of her tweets only because I genuinely appreciate everything that she has to say. I‰’ll explain to you exactly why I love this talented singer-songwriter and producer.

1) She keeps it real.

That‰’s just one example of how this girl rocks.

Earlier this year, Mothica kept it very real over Twitter after what she and producer Bear//Face coined the “#Vaporgate2015‰” affair. Without getting too Perez Hilton of Soundcloud, Vaporgate was a short Internet debacle involving certain problematic (ahem, sexist) remarks with an up-and-coming electronic music producer who shall remain unnamed, but who you can probably find on Twitter.

To build off of this particular incident, I‰’m going to highlight a very poignant issue that is taking hold in social media and the music industry. I would like to emphasize the fact that this problematic and increasingly popular producer initiated a series of tweets directed at Mothica in an attempt to denounce her talent and presence as a woman.

Among the slurs that she claims he used against her, he also tweeted about her by negatively referring to her as a feminist. This particular producer had also made a series of tweets on feminism like “I need feminism because it gives me something to make fun of.‰Û The last time I checked the dictionary, “feminist” was not synonymous with “bitch‰” or “unintelligible,” but I think that idea very well exists in the minds of many.

So what if she is a feminist? Why is that a bad thing to be called? Being called a feminist is a compliment! I don’t think that supporting a cause like equal pay for women was something that should be publicly shamed or made fun of by anyone.

I really admire and respect Mothica’s strong presence in setting people straight, even if it is over the Internet. In this budding music field, people withhold many political opinions as to not lose followers. Yet, the voices of the oppressed should never be silenced and this is why I am speaking about this issue.

I can think of so many female artists who would never peep (or tweet) a word out about calling themselves a feminist because of this taboo reputation people associate with the word. It also does not help that influential male figures on the Internet are throwing this word around as slander to put down women and silence them. Furthermore, those fans who follow and look up to those artists will take after their very harmful thinking and may even perpetuate this negative and false definition.

The only ones who can put a stop to this brewing pot of twisted nonsense are those figures like Mothica who call people out for their unacceptable behavior on the spot and set a positive example toward a more justified society. 50 points for you Mothica. Keep on keeping it real out here on the web. Go you, girl!

2) She‰’s also really talented.

Apart from her fantastically fiery and funny Twitter feed, she has an incredible voice and aesthetics. Just like the previous female producer I wrote about, I found out about Mothica from a feature by Alaya Radio last year.

My favorite collaboration from her, as of yet, is “Molt‰” with Bear//Face.

I think the most accurate way I can describe listening to “Molt‰” is like taking an ethereal shower with stardust sprinkling over you. There‰’s something so magical and enticing about Mothica‰’s voice. Her vocals echo and soar over Bear//Face‰’s celestial production, perfectly encapsulating the essence of the song: molting, regeneration or renewal.

Look for some upcoming collaborations from Mothica with Blackbird Blackbird and possibly even Jacques Greene. There are a lot of great things coming from her and I’m anxiously waiting to hear more of her voice, whether it be backing an amazing track or speaking the truth via Twitter. Just as young Mothica puts it:
