It’s been a while since I first saw underscores perform live. The initial opportunity I had to witness her live talent was in New York City, where she was the opening act for glaive in 2021. I distinctly recall the moment when she stepped onto the stage; she appeared nervous, mentioning that it was one of her first times performing. She lived nearby, and it seemed as though she had just finished her classes, expressing astonishment at the size of the audience that had gathered.

Fast forward two years, and underscores has undergone a complete transformation. After relocating to Wallsocket, MI to work on her album, she has delved into uncovering the secrets of this small American town, eager to share its stories with the world. underscores explains, “I emerged from an obsessive episode with the mentality that everything is beautiful. Wallsocket is about realizing that most things are, but not everything is. Wallsocket is about navigating adulthood as an American and coming to terms with one’s circumstances.”

“Wallsocket” is an exceptional album that defies categorization based on its sounds, tones, and moods. underscores has masterfully crafted an album that represents a significant leap from the “fishmonger” era. While her earlier work was undoubtedly beautiful, “Wallsocket” paints a vivid portrait of a small town, complete with all its hidden complexities. This album demands your attention, as underscores continually pushes the boundaries of her artistry, introducing her audience to new realms, much like the small American town of Wallsocket, MI.

The Hometown Tour kicks off in Washington, D.C., serving as the inaugural stop on the 21-city North American tour. Later in November and December of this year, the tour will also visit the UK and EU. While Wallsocket, MI may not be on the list of tour dates, Washington, D.C. provides underscores with a platform to share her music and unveil the world of Wallsocket to the East Coast audience. Union Stage, one of the best D.C. venues, which has hosted shows for her friends like glaive, midwxst, and aldn, will now host underscores and Torr as they deliver a performance that promises to get the crowd moving.

Underscores and Torr will grace the stage on Sunday, October 1st, and tickets are still available. I can guarantee that this is a show you won’t want to miss. “The Hometown Tour” marks underscores’ first global tour, and she’s ready to have the crowd singing along to her hit songs like “Bozo Bozo Bozo” and “Local (Girls like us).” Previously, following in the footsteps of 100 Gecs, underscores’ first mini-tour sold out in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Grey’s hometown of San Francisco. Since then, Grey has performed on Lollapalooza’s Main Stage, Electric Forest, FVDED in the Park, and Corona Capital CDMX. Grab your tickets here for the Union Stage stop and wish her “good luck!”
