Damien Jurado – Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Sun (Secretly Canadian)
January 29, 2014
Straight out of a 70s rock band
Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Sun is Damien Jurado’s psychedelic indie rock send up to the brash and smokey bands before him. A collaboration with Richard Swift of The Shins, the album fuses dark lyrics with vibrant dizzying sounds to create a trippy little ride. “Silver TimothyÛ, the clear standout of Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Sun with Jurado’s howling vocals and a guitar piece that sounds straight out of a Buffalo Springfield album. Seemingly brighter pieces such as “Jericho Road” and “Silver Donna” haunt listeners with their dark narratives and overly thoughtful lyrics. The album itself is filled with both Biblical allusions and references to science fiction pieces. While at times lost in its own mystique, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Sun is one trip not forgotten.
