Kenna – Relations (Dim Mak)

Kenna - Relations (Dim Mak)

Rafael Smith

A mostly on-the-mark offering of new-wave grooves

This five-track release culls together three previously released mixtape features, coupled with two remixes of the title track. “Relations,” co-produced by Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, boasts a funky instrumental with delicious, crunchy claps and percussion to compliment the track’s flittering keyboards. Childish Gambino’s appearance on the otherwise similar remix fits well, although the rapper sounds very much like Kanye West here. The Justin Martin remix is comparatively sparse, yet echo-heavy, with a bumping drum loop (a Kurtis Blow sample?) providing extra dance floor flavor.
“Wild Wild Life”, a slightly faster song, is equally funky, with a prominent electronic bass line. “Love Is Still Alive” slows things down again, but is pretty unremarkable. As “Relations” and its remix versions prove, Kenna is at his best when crooning over music to make you dance. This EP is likely to have you doing just that.
