James Vincent McMorrow – Post Tropical (Vagrant)
January 27, 2014
Giving James Blake a run for his money.
There is no denying that Early in the Morning was far more than just a solid folk album. However, Post Tropical is a radical departure into a genre that is just now finding itself. The album makes a significant contribution to the emerging Alt-R&B genre that James Blake made popular, but make no mistake- McMorrow is not just following on the heels of Overgrown. Starting with the subtle clapping percussion and McMorrow’s ever-impressive falsetto, Cavalier builds on itself and sets the stage for the rest of the album. But he doesn’t stop there- Red Dust is enough to bring you to tears with nothing more than delectable layers of James Vincent’s silky voice, a quiet piano, and a simple beat. The rumors that McMorrow finished this gem in just three weeks makes it hard to believe that he could accomplish such depth and innovation wrapped in a subtle package. Start to finish, this album is nothing short of a masterpiece.
