Kaleidoscope Sound: Los Blenders

Paz Monge

Have you ever heard the perfect combination between sun, guitar riffs, pool parties and skating/surfing vibes? If not, you should probably start listening to Los Blenders.

All the way from Mexico, these four guys became the hottest band from 2k12-2k13 for the Latin American music scene. With a collective persona expressing “We like lo-fi n‰’ stuff‰” and a Facebook description saying, “We stole your dad‰’s hairstyle, your mom‰’s underwear and your sister‰’s heart,‰” they have won the attention of the legitimate underground musical world of Mexico.

Oye EP was their first release back in September 2011, full of vintage surf rock (“Sub Par”), danceable mysterious tunes (“Batitwist”) and angry percussions (“Mil Ca̱as”). Ah Oh was released several months later, which really launched them into this pseudo-famous status that they‰’re not trying to reach (they just want to have fun and keep playing the hits).

“Vacaciones” and “Ah Oh” (the only two songs in the EP) channel more of a party/danceable aura compared to Oye EP, creating the perfect transition for their third release Yumbinha. Not only does this release has an amazing cover art — a pentagram faded into what looks like a blurry starry sky with colorful lights — but it also emits in only one song what looks like the essence of Los Blenders: pure surf chill rock.

This year they release their fourth EP, Meta y Dinero, basically consisting of perfect hooks, chill guitars and a hypnotizing groove. The self-titled track turns itself into some type of addictive drug because as soon as you play it you can‰’t stop listening to it (plus it has really trippy lyrics). “Surf de Amor” just makes me want to be at the beach surfing, hence the name. “T&T‰” closes the EP with a catchy riff and a great ending.

Los Blenders have toured several spots around Latin America but they rarely offer shows back in Mexico. They visited Costa Rica a couple of months ago and played some shows with friends Las Robertas and Ave Negra.

These four garage rockers still have a lot to offer. Not only did they deliver perfect tunes for a possible summer playlist, but we hope to see their first LP on the horizon. For now we‰’ll have to comfort ourselves with their previous work and start getting out shorts, sunglasses, a surfboard and a chill attitude.
