FaceTime: Le1f Makes His Debut on the Tree House Tour at U Street Music Hall

Le1f began his Tree House tour at U Street Music Hall this past Wednesday. He put on a high energy, sex-oozy show and left me in awe of his dance skills.

The opening acts DonChristian and Lakutis went on stage before 7:45pm. Unfortunately, my clique missed their acts due to transit delays. Antwon opened for Le1f a bit later so my friends and I managed to get a good spot. I was surprised that Le1f had such an early show and I regret missing their sets.

Upon my arrival, I heard telltale dark, looming production sounds that led me to believe Antwon was starting his performance. I quickly made my way to the front to watch the legendary San Jose-based rapper. Antwon rapped aggressively into his microphone and joked with the audience. He made his passion for hydration clear along with his love for “bevs‰” FKA beverages. He played “3rd World Grrl,‰” “Living Every Dream,‰” “Sittin‰’ in Hell,‰” and “40 bag,‰” among others. The audience was feelin‰’ it and gyrated accordingly. Lakutis DJ‰’ed the set and smoothly swayed to the beat. It was obvious they were having a raucous time on stage.

There was a short intermission between Antwon and Le1f so I joined Lakutis and Antwon for a cigarette break outside and discussed languages, “cool‰” spots in D.C. and the tour itself.

I zipped back into the venue and listened to Le1f‰’s wild rapping. He donned knee-high socks and a bleached coiffure. Le1f jumped around the stage like a madman while talk-rapping to the enthusiastic crowd. In regard to his dance moves, Le1f made all the girls (and guys) swoon. He shimmied during “Wut‰” and did some interpretive moves during “Spa Day.‰” Le1f also played “Free Kiki,‰” “Hush bb,‰” and “Damn Son‰” from the brand new Tree House mixtape. He interacted with the audience and danced in response to a special, select few. At one point, he was moved to take off his shirt and writhe on the floor of the stage.

Le1f has arrived! His lyrical skills are on point and his performance abilities are one of a kind. He is going places, and I am thankful I saw the first show on what is destined to be a renowned tour.
