Poetic Justice: Temporal Confusion in Banks‰’ “London EP‰Û

Michael Young

While Banks is by no means the first to produce vocally-driven pop music with electronic backing, she successfully manages to make her music unique. In her London EP, Banks delivers lyrics about the cognitive dissonance brought by feelings of love through a crystal-clear jazzy voice.

Banks‰’ smooth lines lay on top of a minimalistic soundscape; a simple piano rhythm builds into deep synths that steadily undulate in “Waiting Game,‰” the first of the EP‰’s four tracks. The statement “I wish I was in love but I don‰’t want to cause any pain/And if I‰’m feeling like I‰’m evil we‰’ve got nothing to game,‰” captures the apprehensiveness that can be overbearing when thinking into the future of a new relationship. The monochromatic scheme seen in the song‰’s video compliments Banks‰’ skillful use of the minimalist musical theme:

The song “This Is What It Feels Like‰” makes clear why Banks tours with The Weeknd, whose own catalog of music genre-bends R&B vocal stylings and airy electro-house samples. The highly danceable song‰’s grooving beat emphasizes the lyrics which take the listener through the stages of failed love.

The spacey sound of “Bedroom Wall‰” echoes the emptiness of miscommunicated love. The song coasts along and eventually devolves into Banks‰’ repeated pleading: “Do I have to write it on your bedroom wall, you fool?‰” The unanswered call indicates a unfortunate disparity in the lovers‰’ intentions.

“Always calling me unstable/You so easily can make me cry/Just ‰cause you are in a mood,‰” she laments on the EP‰’s final track. This contrasts with the chorus, where the target of the song‰’s frustrations begs: “Baby don‰’t go, I didn‰’t know/I‰’ll change I swear, I‰’ll change I swear.‰” Banks clearly sources the instigator of her discontentment as the emotionally fickle lover who does not realize the ways he hurts her.

Though London EP only has four tracks, each offers a unique sound. The lyrics of each song also contemplate the different types of problems catalyzed by miscommunication and individual confusion between two lovers. Banks‰’ euphonious voice and originality ensure that listeners can expect much more to come from the rising artist.
