Eye Candy: Girls‰’ Generation

If you missed them last Sunday, (I know I did) the livestreamed YouTube Music Awards were quite the party. Featuring performances by everyone from Tyler the Creator to the Arcade Fire, it was clearly not an event to be missed. Thank goodness it‰’s all on the internet.

Most of the award‰’s winners were not shocking choices. Among others, Taylor Swift, Macklemore and Eminem took home Tubies. The winner of “Best Video‰” came as a surprise to most English speakers when it went to K-pop band Girls‰’ Generation.

With 75 million views on YouTube, Girls‰’ Generation is clearly a favorite among K-Pop lovers and beyond. The video for their song “????” (“I Got a Boy‰Û) is a candy coated pop music video dream, with the shocking pink aesthetics not unlike those of Nicki Minaj.

The 9 member group spends the majority of the video participating in a heavily choreographed dance while waiting for the moment to be spotlighted for their solo. This style of heavily reminiscent of the mid 90s boy band music videos, and is highlighted by the high contrast lighting and flash camera angles.

The video keeps this fresh by occasionally cutting to slow scenes of spotlighted members interacting with their “boy.‰” These shots are still day shots, using an abundance of soft natural lighting to contrast the harshly lit indoor dance scenes.

The indoor sets are elaborate and brightly lit, prompting a wide depth of field for the large frame dance shots. These look stunning in HD, but are tend to swallow the 9 dancing girls and their insanely cute outfits with their intricate and colorful design. On the single shots of members, a compressed depth of field works better, because they allow the busy background to fade in favor of the member as the subject of the shot.

A sequence near the end of the video strips it of the background to instead focus on a single member under a dim spotlight. This shot pulls back to reveal the rest of the band and the flashy set behind them. If the lights weren’t so overly dynamic in this scene, it would have been a great way to show off the dance moves. This problem persists, though not with such prominence, throughout the video.

Girls‰’ Generation‰’s video is a visual treat, though somewhat over the top. But for a girl band this big, what‰’s the harm in a video that seeks to be larger than life?
