Eye Candy: Cats

Melanie Asherman

I just‰Û_I really like cats. It‰’s time to let the fur fly and see what the music video world has to offer for we bold, feline-obsessed few.

Paula Abdul, ‰ÛOpposites Attract‰”

The classic cat music video, Paula Abdul‰’s “Opposites Attract” features Paula rapping alongside hip hop legend MC Skat Cat. At what point did record executives think that a rapping cartoon cat could be sold to a demographic older than 2-8? Apparently in 1989, America could be convinced that MC Skat Cat had enough street cred to be sleeping with Paula Abdul. His rapping is nearly up to snuff despite the fact that he more closely resembles a weasel than a cat. Though he kept up with Abdul‰’s fancy footwork, he couldn‰’t manage to hold a career on his own and faded into obscurity after the failure of his solo album.

Akwafina , “NYC Bitche$‰Û

Awkafina‰’s single, “NYC Bitche$”, shows a lot of promise for an emerging female rapper. Her video, however, is under produced and could have used a bit of direction. Parts are clearly filmed on a cell phone camera, while others are shot with a well-controlled DSLR. For someone who lives in NYC, you think she could have found someone with a nicer camera willing to work cheap. In the end of her video, she holds and plays with a cat, which is this otherwise mediocre product‰’s one saving grace. The cat struggles in her arms during its appearance, as though it understands the questionable quality of the video it‰’s being thrust into.

Best Coast, “Crazy for You‰Û

Before she decided to clean up her act, the only thing Bethany of Best Coast liked singing about more than marijuana was her cat. It‰’s no surprise that the quirky indie-rocker had cats “direct‰” the video for “Crazy for You.‰” Through personifurcation of her cat crew, we get a healthy dose of adorability in this video. The cats look relatively happy, despite being forced to wear everything from ties to tiny Hawaiian shots. The video does rely on played out cat meme humor to carry the bit, the band members smoking cat nip with the cats completely makes up for it.

Gloria Estefan, “Bad Boys‰”

The bootleg equivalent of a far off Broadway production of “Cats,‰” Gloria Estefan takes a trip to what is possibly the most frightening alley in downtown LA in her video for “Bad Boys”. The boys in question are men (and some women, possibly) in a horrific amount of makeup, wearing what look to be the skins of actual cats on their heads. These alley cats are supposedly ruffians, but do nothing worse than look at pinups of kittens and have a dance party in their alley. They groove with Gloria in eerily synced choreography, and she nearly kisses the leader of the pack, when a dog cop busts the scene, scattering the cats and leaving Gloria to dance alone.
