FaceTime: Get to Know Metronomy

Metronomy is a British rock band with members Joseph Mount, Oscar Cash, Anna Prior and Olugbenga (Gbenga) Adelekan. Their most famous albums are Nights Out from 2008 and The English Riviera from 2011. Metronomy‰’s music contains experimental percussion and synthesizer-heavy sounds. They use an array of noises ranging from hand claps and electric guitar to door creaks and drum kit samples. Metronomy has both male and female vocalists, bold beats and are totally unafraid of sounding “busy.‰Û

Earlier this month, Metronomy announced a new album entitled Love Letters and recently debuted, “I‰’m Aquarius.‰” The track is easily one of my favorite songs released this year. “I‰’m Aquarius‰” is a lyrically depressing song, but with upbeat drums and backing sounds. Lead singer Joseph Mount retells a misunderstanding between lovers: “Now I see how quick you must want to forget, ‰cause you left the ring I bought you with your cigarettes…I can take the ring back where I got it from.‰” Anna Prior sings “Shoop doop doop ah‰” throughout the song and gives it a 60s revival feel. The single contains a mix of looping technology with piano segments alongside retro female vocals. Old and new come together in a unique and dance-worthy way on “I‰’m Aquarius.‰Û

I am particularly invested in this track because astrology has come up this year more than any other year of my life. It seems I keep befriending tarot card-toting, horoscope-checking, palm-reading people. “I‰’m Aquarius‰” represents my perspective on astrology with lyrics like, “You said our love was written in the stars, but I never paid attention to my charts…You‰’re a novice and I‰’m a Taurus.‰” I am wary of horoscopes and I do not think someone‰’s sign represents their personality. I‰’ll believe the prophetical-snippet for my sign if it contains good news and I‰’ll dismiss it if there is a depressing prediction. I think this is a great way to approach horoscopes and I recommend that readers adopt my philosophy.

Love Letters will be released on March 10, 2014 and if the album is anything like “I‰’m Aquarius,‰” listeners have a lot to look forward to.
