Eye Candy: "Bound 2"

Released to the fanfare of both the internet and Ellen Degeneres, Kanye‰’s new video opens on impressive time lapse imagery of majestic mountains, presumably to show his timeless love for fiancÌ©e, Kim Kardashian. She then toplessly writhes on a motorcycle for the majority of this video.

Kanye West is not a master of subtlety. If you hadn‰’t picked up on it by now, this video should give you a hint of it. “Bound 2‰” is a visually oversaturated love letter that capitalizes on overly defined textures and incredibly unrealistic green screen.

Opening on a running herd of wild horses, Kanye clearly seeks to inform the viewers that he, the wild stallion, has become tame. He “rides‰” a motorcycle (he sits on it and lip syncs) with the clouds passing in the background. This is intercut with Kim laying on a separate motorcycle, looking lustily into the camera.

The entirety of the video is comprised of Kanye and Kim taking turns staring into the camera while being green screened onto oversaturated footage. The lights are clearly being manually moved to try and match the lighting of the background footage, to an awful effect where Kayne is constantly cast in half shadow.

This stereotypical imagery seems to be Kanye‰’s acknowledgement of the cheesiness of romance. He clearly understands the visual aesthetics of film, and wants us to look at this and realize how manicured it is. This is encapsulated in the scene where he “has sex‰” (moves his hips while fully clothed) with Kim on his motorcycle .

For some, Kardashian‰’s toplessness and lack of action in this video would ring as a patriarchal statement about the lack of actions on women‰’s part. However, Kanye does most of the sexual work while Kim merely does small acts of physical affection. It seems that he gives most of the power to her, her to stare into the camera and smile while he lip syncs his feelings to the world. If he had taken off that horrible tie-dye tee shirt, I think it could be safely said that they had an equal role in being sexualized and emotionally exposed in this video.

Kanye takes pride in the deliberation of his actions being directly against what people would think is “good‰” or “right‰” for his image (see: selling confederate flag merchandise as a way of claiming the symbol for himself). Though “Bound 2” is certainly not perfect in any measure, it makes a statement that falls in line with this contrarian image of Kayne.
