2014 will be a breakthrough year for many up and coming artistes, and hopefully for this young man who is starting to go places. British DJ and producer Pete Lawrie Winfield, who records music under the moniker Until The Ribbon Breaks, did not originally intend to pursue a career in music. With a background in film, Winfield decided writing music for his films was a better fit, and has not looked back ever since.

Winfield‰’s influences come from many places, such as hip-hop, punk, classical music, and his parents who were both musicians. His film background also is evident in the single Pressure from the EP. The music video consists of scenes from David Lynch‰’s 1997 film Lost Highway, and it pulls you into the video narrative, along with the R&B influenced beats and its hypnotic voiced-over vocals. As Winfield puts it, it was incredibly liberating and exciting, and also felt like everything was on the brink of falling apart. The song starts off slow and steady, and is then accompanied by the piano. Just when you think you can be lulled by it, the tempo accelerates a little (think Massive Attack) and then releases you from its pressure.

Pete doesn‰’t have an album released yet, but an EP titled A Taste Of Silver. Even with just 5 tracks, it already has the potential to be so much more. Having remixed Royals by Lorde and supporting her on tour as a DJ and touring with artistes such as Phantogram, the journey‰’s just beginning for Pete. Another track from him, Romeo, was also featured on Grey‰’s Anatomy. Granted, Romeo didn‰’t really fascinate me as much as Pressure did, but it slowly grew on me, and hopefully for everyone else as well. Huffington Post including him as an artist to watch in 2014 also speaks volumes for this man‰’s career.
